Standard of Measurement

Do not judge or you too will be judged.  For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Matthew 7: 1-2).

This is a verse that is quoted very often.  We have all heard it quoted perhaps directly to us and we have most likely  to someone.  After many years of hearing and quoting these verses I noticed something very interesting that I had overlooked.  The word measure and measured boldly stood out to me.

The definition of measure is to ascertain the size, amount or degree of something by using an instrument of device marked in standard units or by comparing it with an object of known size.  Unfortunately, we all have a standard of measurement that we think is right, fair and just depending on the circumstances. Often times, when the same circumstance occurs we don’t agree with the same standard of measurement that is used against us or someone we love.

My husband and I have individuals in our family with similar traits that we don’t particularly agree with. When we have a discussion about them, I am quick to mete out what I believe is a fair and just opinion about his relative but when he offers the same or similar opinion about my family member, it doesn’t settle well with me.  Even though, it is the exact opinion.  It is a reminder to me to always be very cautious with the standard of measurement that I offer because it will be measured against me. It reminds me of a boomerang, when it is thrown, it returns to the originator!

Today, praise God for His Word that reveals our unappealing flaws and that he gives us the opportunity every morning to be new.
