Being a Disciple
The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus (John 1:37).
We use many words to describe our relationship with God. We are Christians, believers, and church members. Jesus refers to us as disciples. It was His most common description of those who trusted Him in the Gospels.
A disciple is one who responds in faith and obedience to the gracious call to follow Jesus. The basic idea revolves around the roles of a teacher and student. We learn from our Lord. The Bible gives us descriptions of His nature, character, actions, thoughts, and desires. This knowledge is not simple facts but a pattern we have chosen to follow.
We played Follow the Leader as children. When the leader walked in a circle; we walked in the circle. When he raised his hand; we raised ours. When he jumped over a limb; so did we.
Being a disciple is seeing how Jesus lived and following His pattern. How did Jesus relate to God the Father? How did He face adversity? What was His reaction in conflict? How did He define true purpose, peace, and pleasure? A disciple learns from His example and reflects that wisdom in every moment.
This week you will face different situations. Some will be great. Others will upset you. In all of them, look to Jesus. Be His disciple. Follow His example.
